Short-answer retrieval check. Use map symbols, position words, and routes to describe places in a community.
Materials & preparation
- One printed learner copy; keep the answer view separate when provided
- Pencil and eraser
- Model and teach
- Think aloud through one example, including how you notice and correct a mistake. Then use this learner direction: Answer each question in a complete word or sentence. Follow a route between two landmarks and say each direction or position word aloud.
- Support
- Complete the first item together, highlight the key word or visual clue, then fade the prompt.

- Ask for an explanation using the topic words, then add one new example. Create a new example that follows the same idea, then explain how it works.
