Classify examples under headings. Use map symbols, position words, and routes to describe places in a community.
Materials & preparation
- One printed learner copy; keep the answer view separate when provided
- Pre-cut pieces, or child-safe scissors with adult supervision
- A clear surface for arranging the pieces
- Model and teach
- Place two examples side by side and model the feature that makes them match or differ. Then use this learner direction: Cut out the cards and sort each item under the correct heading. Follow a route between two landmarks and say each direction or position word aloud.
- Support
- Complete the first item together, highlight the key word or visual clue, then fade the prompt.
- Stretch
- Ask for an explanation using the topic words, then add one new example. Create a new example that follows the same idea, then explain how it works.
- Check for understanding
- Give one new item and ask the learner to place it and state the sorting rule.
